I should have realized this immediately when I drove among the impossibly white dunes and saw a camel holding court near one of the parking lots. Or when I hiked the Alkili Flats to the giant sign reminding everyone that a big part of the park is a missile testing range.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis was my first time taking photography in New Mexico. It was definitely a challenge trying to find interesting contours that photographed well and weren’t marred by criss-crossing footprints. There’s only one road into the park, and it was fairly dense with people sledding down the gypsum sand. Many stuck around for a gorgeous rosy sunset, and a bit of stargazing. How you just pick right up where you left off? The squawking of penguins staking out their territory mixed with the acrid smell of penguin poop was all too familiar by this point. A group of penguins is called a \"waddle,\" and these were framed against a towering mountain behind them. They're called moonbows. They happen during a full moon when the waterfalls are rushing and causing lots of mist. Add in a clear night plus make sure the the angle between moon, photographer, and mist is 42 degrees.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI visited Yosemite in April of 2022 with the singular goal of getting a moonbow picture. My last night in the park, I wanted to try and get Upper Yosemite Falls and Half Dome in the same shot. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the moonbow wasn't going to happen until late, and I had already pulled an all nighter getting up to Glacier Point. Plus the position of the moonbow was going to be too low for my composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo instead, I trekked to the path in Cook's meadow and found a nice quiet spot to set up my tripod. The park was quiet and peaceful. Frogs croaked in the stream of water in front of me. I woke before everyone, goosebumps and butterflies buzzing at my first sight of the white continent. I was on sensory overload: the stark white of the ice, the crisp air, the squawking penguins, the bobbing icebergs. Everything was new and never been seen. I thanked my past self for booking the first boat of the season. Everything was still covered in snow and ice. The last time this comet showed up was tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists think it won't come back for another 50,000 years. They think it might not ever come back. We could be the last humans to look up and see this hunk of ice hurtling through the sky.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhen I first heard the Green Comet was heading towards us, I knew I had to try and photograph it. However, nothing about this was easy. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eFirst, I live in Chicago. This was taken in January. If you didn't know, there aren't a lot of clear skies in the midwest during the winter. Where I live is also flooded with light pollution - look up and you may be lucky to see a dozen stars. But as I investigated places to get away from the lights - Pictured Rocks, Rocky Mountain NP, even Alaska; all of them had cloudy forecasts. Death Valley was the only place I could find with dark skies that was also affordable.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eI carved out two days to visit the park. That gave me two mornings where the waxing moon wouldn't be in the sky and I could have a chance at capturing the comet. When I checked the forecast before my trip, one of those mornings would be at least partly cloudy. Because of flooding in 2023, most roads into the northern half of the park were closed. I needed an interesting foreground that had a clear view of the northern sky. The comet was projected to be near Polaris, in the constellation Camelopardalis. Contenders were Rainbow Canyon, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Badwater Basin, and Artist's Drive. And the crater WAS a possibility, I'd just need to drive on unpaved roads meant for 4x4 vehicles to get there. I did not have a 4x4 vehicle.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eStill, I decided to give the crater a shot, planning on turning around if things looked dicey. After Gold Point, an old ghost town, the road definitely got sketchy. And there was a dusting of snow complicating manners. After I got stuck in some deep sand AND snow and managed to push myself out, I decided to give up on the crater, and scouted the other locations.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIf it was easy, it wouldn't be worth it, right?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLuckily, Monday evening and Tuesday morning were clear. My fingers were turning numb as I tried to locate the comet with my camera (I'm 42, my eyes aren't good enough to see if with the naked eye). After many, many failed attempts and a quick drive to cell phone coverage to download a new stargazing app with the comet in it, I was able to lock into it. I shot as many photos as I could with different settings and focal lengths. I shot a photo of the foreground as nighttime ended and nautical twilight \/ blue hour began to spread light over the landscape, allowing me to get the dunes and an interesting dead tree I'd scouted during the day. The 80 degree day got cooler, and the landscape got darker. Day time insects went away. Camera geeks talked about their gear and past eclipses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you've never seen the totality, the last minute is wild. It gets dark, fast. The stars and planets come out. Shadows do really weird things. The last bit of light hangs on, creating a diamond ring illusion in the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, when the sun is completely covered, you're on another planet. Everyone gasps and cheers. You get a little scared, and start to understand why early humans were so terrified of these events and saw them as omens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis eclipse looked like a diamond flower in the sky. Petals of corona streamed out from the moon's jet black disc. A bright diamond ring of light encircles the sun. Dots of red stood out on the ring. These were solar flares multiple earths tall. I live in Chicago, and my book is all about dark sky phenomenon in National Parks. So I changed tactics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI booked a one-way flight to Alaska, and vowed not to return until I saw them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI planned on going by myself, but a couple weeks before the trip I met up with a new photographer friend in Yosemite. He was on a multi-month road trip and didn’t know what he was doing after Firefall. So, of course I invited him up to Alaska, and he was stoked to join.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust before our flights left, we did a gut check. The entire state of Alaska was going to be covered with clouds all week. The moon was waxing, threatening to blot out the lights. Was this going to be another bust?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the excellent guidance from some Alaska natives and aurora chasers, we got convinced to ignore the forecasts. We arrived, gathered our gear, stocked up on bear spray, and headed for Denali under the best sight ever – clear skies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe found an amazing view point that looked over Troublesome Creek leading to the tallest mountain in North America, which is pretty hard to see in its own right. The light faded and the temperature dropped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe took our test shots, and waited. We saw what looked like air glow just over the horizon. We decided to head up the hill for a better viewpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the time we got up there, the Aurora was out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA band of light stretched across the sky, a ethereal rainbow ending at Denali. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The lights weren’t moving, but they glowed a faint green and strong enough that we could see them with the naked eye. Even though we knew it was a fairly calm show, we were both ecstatic. I couldn’t believe I was finally seeing them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were happy to snap away shot after shot, getting time lapses and different compositions through the trees and closer to the mountain. After three hours or so with nothing really changing, I asked my friend if he was ready to try another viewpoint to get another angle. I started fiddling with my camera, and wasn’t looking at the sky when my friend walked back to his spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky started going crazy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Nope! We’re not leaving. No way. Oh my god! Come look at this.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hurried over from behind the tees to get a clear view. There were ribbons of light undulating in the sky. I could see them moving in real time, shimmering over the peak of Denali. If you watch videos of people witnessing a strong aurora show, you know how hard it is for them to not express their awe and wonder out loud. That’s exactly what we were doing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe must have said, “I can’t believe this,” dozens of times while we snapped away. As the show faded, the aurora thinned and spread across the whole sky, filling everything to the north with ephemeral green gas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, at 3 or 4 a.m. we landed in our car to sleep in subzero temperatures, still buzzing from what we saw.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe saw the lights 3 more times this trip, every time there were clear skies. We were even treated to a stronger show with different colors on top of Murphy Dome in Fairbanks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I’ll never forget that first night in Alaska when I saw the Northern Lights fill the sky for the first time. They marveled at how many more starts they could see here than in suburban Chicago. The 80 degree day got cooler, and the landscape got darker. Day time insects went away. Camera geeks talked about their gear and past eclipses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you've never seen the totality, the last minute is wild. It gets dark, fast. The stars and planets come out. Shadows do really weird things. The last bit of light hangs on, creating a diamond ring illusion in the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, when the sun is completely covered, you're on another planet. Everyone gasps and cheers. You get a little scared, and start to understand why early humans were so terrified of these events and saw them as omens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis eclipse looked like a diamond flower in the sky. Petals of corona streamed out from the moon's jet black disc. A bright diamond ring of light encircles the sun. Dots of red stood out on the ring. These were solar flares multiple earths tall. Absolutely insane that these were visible to the naked eye.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was absorbed in seeing it with my eyes. and listening to my kids chatter away at what they were seeing. So I wasn't as focused as I could have been on the photos. But this is those one-of-a-kind things that you cannot see anywhere else. It's a solitary tree on a spike of rock. There are many ruins and follies in the Elkmont area, and none prettier than this old bridge crossing a stream. Situated under the trees in the heart of the firefly habitat, it was perfect. It's a solitary tree on a spike of rock. I live in Chicago, and my book is all about dark sky phenomenon in National Parks. So I needed a strong solar storm, clear skies, a clear schedule, and a very patient partner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s really hard to line all of those up. So I changed tactics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI booked a one-way flight to Alaska, and vowed not to return until I saw them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI planned on going by myself, but a couple weeks before the trip I met up with a new photographer friend in Yosemite. He was on a multi-month road trip and didn’t know what he was doing after Firefall. So, of course I invited him up to Alaska, and he was stoked to join.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust before our flights left, we did a gut check. The entire state of Alaska was going to be covered with clouds all week. The moon was waxing, threatening to blot out the lights. Was this going to be another bust?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the excellent guidance from some Alaska natives and aurora chasers, we got convinced to ignore the forecasts. We arrived, gathered our gear, stocked up on bear spray, and headed for Denali under the best sight ever – clear skies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe found an amazing view point that looked over Troublesome Creek leading to the tallest mountain in North America, which is pretty hard to see in its own right. The light faded and the temperature dropped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe took our test shots, and waited. We saw what looked like air glow just over the horizon. We decided to head up the hill for a better viewpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the time we got up there, the Aurora was out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA band of light stretched across the sky, a ethereal rainbow ending at Denali. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The lights weren’t moving, but they glowed a faint green and strong enough that we could see them with the naked eye. Even though we knew it was a fairly calm show, we were both ecstatic. I couldn’t believe I was finally seeing them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were happy to snap away shot after shot, getting time lapses and different compositions through the trees and closer to the mountain. After three hours or so with nothing really changing, I asked my friend if he was ready to try another viewpoint to get another angle. I started fiddling with my camera, and wasn’t looking at the sky when my friend walked back to his spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky started going crazy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Nope! We’re not leaving. No way. Oh my god! Come look at this.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hurried over from behind the tees to get a clear view. There were ribbons of light undulating in the sky. I could see them moving in real time, shimmering over the peak of Denali. If you watch videos of people witnessing a strong aurora show, you know how hard it is for them to not express their awe and wonder out loud. That’s exactly what we were doing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe must have said, “I can’t believe this,” dozens of times while we snapped away. As the show faded, the aurora thinned and spread across the whole sky, filling everything to the north with ephemeral green gas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, at 3 or 4 a.m. we landed in our car to sleep in subzero temperatures, still buzzing from what we saw.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe saw the lights 3 more times this trip, every time there were clear skies. We were even treated to a stronger show with different colors on top of Murphy Dome in Fairbanks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I’ll never forget that first night in Alaska when I saw the Northern Lights fill the sky for the first time. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but the desert is literally a forest of these towering plants. If they had foliage, this park would be as dense as a jungle. Even outside the park the Arizona landscape is covered with Saguaro cactus. They look like needles from far away. I grabbed what was likely the last hotel room between the park and my kid and I started our 20 hour trek. We needed every hour, as the camera gear I rented didn't arrive until just before our planned flight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an added challenge, I discovered my tripod was missing a screw when we got to Green River and I wanted to get a shot of the sunset for the night before. Perfect!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf it was easy, it wouldn't be worth it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hemmed and hawed the night before, but decided on Canyonlands. I knew the picture would be better, but I feared traffic would be worse. I set an alarm for 4am, hoping that would be enough time to get to the spot I wanted. I also knew that if we got stuck, there were more places than in Capitol Reef I could use as a backup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTurns out, traffic was a breeze. We were one of the first in the park. We went to the White Rim Overlook, but the sun was coming up in just the wrong spot and there wouldn't be a forefround I was happy with. So we started walking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was a place I remembered with a view down a canyon and the La Sal Mountains. As we walked the rim, I spotted another spot that would line up great with the White Rim Overlook. As it turns out, that was our best bet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe set up shop. The 80 degree day got cooler, and the landscape got darker. Day time insects went away. Camera geeks talked about their gear and past eclipses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you've never seen the totality, the last minute is wild. It gets dark, fast. The stars and planets come out. Shadows do really weird things. The last bit of light hangs on, creating a diamond ring illusion in the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, when the sun is completely covered, you're on another planet. Everyone gasps and cheers. You get a little scared, and start to understand why early humans were so terrified of these events and saw them as omens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis eclipse looked like a diamond flower in the sky. Petals of corona streamed out from the moon's jet black disc. A bright diamond ring of light encircles the sun. Dots of red stood out on the ring. These were solar flares multiple earths tall.
