Big Bend Milky Way Photography
My first stop on this “14 parks in 14 days” road trip took me to the very edge of the United States.
Big Bend National Park is one of the largest, most remote, and least visited parks in the country. It took me a couple days to get there from Chicago and added quite a bit of drive time to my trek. But I knew that there’d never be a convenient way to visit this place filled with rugged desert landscape, prickly cacti, and unique wildlife. Getting a Big Bend photo was as close to a “must do” as it could be.
I spent most of my day scouting in and around the Chisos Mountains and Santa Elena canyon. When I was there, the Rio Grande was a wadable river. Signs warned visitors not to cross over into Mexico, but there wasn’t anything to stop you if you really wanted to. Where the river flowed out of Santa Elena Canyon, cliffs hundreds of feet tall hug the river and prevent crossings.
The thing that stood out to the me the most was the purple cacti dotting the landscape. Their clusters of rich color stood out against the reds, browns, rusts, and yellows of the desert. Because of the remoteness, when night fell the stars came out in full force, filling the Texas sky. There’s a reason Big Bend night photography from all sorts of artists is so stunning.
As I left, a pack of javelinas (wild pigs) trotted across the road on the way out of the park. A few of the young ones stared at my headlights until they remembered to follow mom and dad into the safety of the night. It was just me and the pigs on that road in the middle of the night. If you’re looking for solitude, this is an excellent place to find it.
