I booked a one-way ticket to Alaska with the mission to see the Northern Lights. But I would have been an idiot to ignore everything else the state had to offer.
And we saw a lot of it. In our hunt for clear skies at night, we drove over 2,000 miles in a week. During the day, we scouted public lands for interesting compositions for the Northern Lights.
We ended up seeing some incredible sunsets along the way. Cotton candy skies behind snow-covered jagged mountains. Trees blasted by months of winter winds and sub-zero temperatures. The vast desolation of night country along the Dalton Highway, all the way to the Arctic Circle.
Even if we hadn’t seen the lights, this would have been an incredible trip. Alaska is one of those places where you can stand anywhere in the state, look in any direction, and have your breath taken away.
And during the winter, it’s an experience unlike any other. Barely anyone else is crazy enough to brave the -10 degree temperatures at night. When we stood in Denali watching the sunset, I truly felt like the only person alive for miles. The world was so quiet. Both because it was so empty, and because the thick blanket of snow deadened all the sound. I felt like I could hear my heartbeat in my ears, it was that quiet.
It's moments like that where you understand the phrase, “The silence was deafening.”

What's great about open editions, you ask?
Open editions highlight some of the amazing places I've been lucky enough to experience. They're perfect for collecting on a budget.
Open editions can be bought by anyone who is interested. You also might find them on a puzzle.
If you're interested in something a little more rare, have a look at my limited editions. Unlike open editions, a limited number of prints will be made, and then no one can buy them again.
