Firefly Photography in Cumberland Falls State Park

Synchronous Fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains

In early June, as the days stretch long and the air turns heavy with humidity, something poetic happens at Cumberland Falls State Park in Kentucky. While most visitors come hoping to glimpse the rare moonbow—a rainbow formed by moonlight—another quiet wonder does an opening act. Just before the moon rises high enough to cast its arc across the waterfall, fireflies begin their own performance.

What does that moment look like?

Imagine standing on the riverbank below the roar of the falls. The crowd’s murmurs fade to whispers as the last light drains from the sky. Slowly, as if on cue, the surrounding forest begins to shimmer. Thousands of fireflies blink to life, their greenish-yellow glows swirling through the underbrush and between the trees.

It’s like the forest is holding its breath.

I'd always heard that you can see moonbows in Cumberland Falls, Kentucky, So when I had an extra day after the firefly trips were over that also lined up with a full moon and clear skies, I decided to stay out one more night to see what I could see.

The photo you see here was captured in June 2025 while I was waiting for a rainbow caused by moonlight. It’s a composite of more than an hour’s worth of exposures—each tiny glow a single spark in a long summer night.
