There’s hidden life in the desert waiting to be sprung free.
All it takes is water. When the winter snows and rains in the American West are heavier than normal, they can create what’s called a superbloom. All that moisture goes into the ground and germinates thousands and thousands of seeds from the last blooming event. Temperatures warm.
What was once scrubland is suddenly filled with carpets of poppies and lupine. The desert is painted with wildflowers. It attracts not just pollinators, but scores of curious humans too.
The blooms mature and drop thousands and thousands of seeds, which then lie dormant for years at a time until the next wet winter to start the cycle over.
This picture was taken in Arizona during the super bloom of 2023. California and Arizona had seen record setting winters in terms of precipitation, and I was closely monitoring online discussions to make sure I could time my trip to the right park and the right time.
The opportunity came to visit the Phoenix and Tuscon area to go wildflower hunting, and I scored big time with Picacho Peak State Park. The windward side of the mountains had scores of poppies and lupine blooming up and down the slopes.
And at sunrise, I found myself with the trails to myself. I was able to get down and lay in the dirt to get close to the flowers without worrying about tripping a fellow hiker.

What's great about open editions, you ask?
Open editions highlight some of the amazing places I've been lucky enough to experience. They're perfect for collecting on a budget.
Open editions can be bought by anyone who is interested. You also might find them on a puzzle.
If you're interested in something a little more rare, have a look at my limited editions. Unlike open editions, a limited number of prints will be made, and then no one can buy them again.
